What Causes Dizziness?

Dizziness is a feeling of lightheadedness, unsteadiness, or like the room is spinning. It can be unsettling, but it’s usually temporary. Common causes include:

  • Dehydration: Not drinking enough water can lead to dizziness, especially in hot weather.
  • Low blood sugar: If your blood sugar drops too low, it can make you feel shaky, dizzy, or weak.
  • Medications: Certain medications, like those for blood pressure, can cause dizziness as a side effect.
  • Sudden changes in position: Standing up too quickly can make your blood pressure drop (called postural hypotension).
  • Inner ear problems: Issues like vertigo or infections can affect your balance.
  • Stress or fatigue: Emotional stress or poor sleep can also make you feel lightheaded.

Home Remedies to Help

If you’re feeling dizzy, try these steps to steady yourself and feel better:

  1. Sit or Lie Down: Stop what you’re doing and sit or lie down until the dizziness passes. This helps prevent falls or injuries.
  2. Stay Hydrated: Sip water or an electrolyte drink to rehydrate, especially if you’ve been sweating or feeling weak.
  3. Eat a Snack: Low blood sugar can cause dizziness. Have a small snack with protein and carbs, like a banana with peanut butter or crackers with cheese.
  4. Move Slowly: Avoid sudden movements. When standing up, rise slowly and give your body time to adjust.
  5. Breathe Deeply: If dizziness is caused by stress or anxiety, try slow, deep breaths to calm your body.
  6. Check Your Medications: If dizziness is frequent, review your medications with your doctor to see if any could be causing it.

When to Contact Your Doctor

Occasional dizziness is normal, but you should contact your healthcare provider if:

  • The dizziness is severe, frequent, or getting worse.
  • You also experience fainting, blurred vision, nausea, or confusion.
  • You have trouble walking, speaking, or notice weakness on one side of your body.
  • The dizziness appears after a new medication or change in your treatment plan.
