There is a common misconception that fruit can cause weight gain because it contains sugar. Yeah. If you eat too much fruit, of course you’ll have trouble with your weight! But despite the sugar content, fruit is actually an important part of a healthy diet and can be enjoyed as part of a weight loss or maintenance plan! Read on to learn the benefits of fruit, and when to watch out for your fruit consumption. If you don't feel like reading, watch the video instead!
Fruit is Fabulous!
The sugar in fruit is naturally occurring and is accompanied by fiber, vitamins, and minerals that are important for good health. While it is true that consuming too much of anything can contribute to weight gain, fruit is generally low in calories and can be a healthy choice as part of a balanced diet.
Fruit is a nutritious and convenient food that can be included in a healthy diet. It is not generally considered to be a food that causes weight gain on its own…. if eaten in moderation.
But Fruit Can Be Fattening, Too
However, like all foods, it is important to pay attention to when and how much of it you consume.
- Eat too much of any food, including fruit, and you can develop an excess of calories in your diet, which can contribute to weight gain over time.
- Time your fruit snacks appropriately: Fruits are sugary. they give us quick carbohydrate-fueled energy that lasts for 30 minutes or so, and then it’s gone. So don’t eat fruit with other carbs like in your meal. Have it for a snack, instead. If you want extra, plan to exercise a bit afterward to give your body a means to use the extra sugar.
Do You Have a Loaded Fruit Tree?
If you are constantly struggling with the benefits and drawbacks of a plentiful harvest, try to disperse your extra fruit to others that you love. Don’t eat it all by yourself!
- Sell some of it (lemonade stands aren’t just for kids) 🙂
- Freeze some
- Give some away
- Ship it! (I’ll ship to family the fruits that don’t easily rot, like passion fruits, apples, oranges, and fuyu persimmons)
Takeaways
In general, it is recommended that people aim to include a variety of fruits in their diet as part of a balanced, calorie-controlled diet. Choosing a variety of fruits can help to ensure that you are getting a wider range of nutrients and can also help to keep your meals and snacks interesting.
